Google Chrome Notebook Review 1

While I was out of town, an unlabeled box arrived.  My oldest son said something about a lithium battery label.  I told him to just leave it and I would open it when I got home.  Saturday morning, I opened the box.  Having been on the beta train with Google with just about every product they have put out over the years, I was disappointed that I didn’t get one of these in the first round.  However, now that it has arrived I have no hard feelings.  :-)

I’ve done my normal tweaks to Chrome (reduced font size to 14) and sync’d all my extensions.  Everything works as expected, although I did experience some flaky sounds coming from a video playing. I power-cycled the notebook and it worked once again.  Hopefully it’s not a sign of things to come.

Anyways, the battery life looks good from its first charge.  Screen is good and bright on and off the battery.  The fonts are clear and edges are crisp.  No noticeable heat, so it’s comfortable to operate from your lap.  Chrome performance is a bit less than what I get on the company laptop (Lenovo T400), but more than acceptable for what it is.

Obviously this isn’t really a test of the hardware, but a test of the platform and cloud living.  I hope to have regular posts about my experiences with the notebook that I can share with whomever stumbles upon my posts.

I have Google Wave and Voice invites!

Vacation:

I have finished setting my Out of Office message on the work email, vacation is officially here!  Now I have some time to cleanup my blog site a bit and work on some projects around the house.

Google Wave and Voice Invites:

As I was going through my account on Google, I noticed that I have 3 Google Voice invites and 11 Google Wave invites. I have already handed out quite a few invites for Wave before, but I haven’t noticed any Voice invites until recently.  The Wave invites will go out to the first 11 people that send me a direct message on Twitter or Facebook.  The Voice invites will go out to 3 people chosen on Christmas day.  If you are interested in being included in the voice invites send me a direct message on Twitter or Facebook.

Site Updates:

I have moved my live shack feed to the NE4RD page of my blog.  This is not on all the time, but I try to have something up there when I’m operating on the ham radio equipment.  I have also updated my About page to include an updated look at my resume.
